To raise professional awareness among students and to help them gain insight about opportunities in various industries, IEEE IAS BUET Student Branch Chapter; in collaboration with IEEE BUET Student Branch, IEEE BUET Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, IEEE IAS Bangladesh Chapter, and IEEE Bangladesh Section has conducted a panel discussion titled “Second Industry-Academia Innovation Forum.” The theme of the event was “Industry Insights & Applications during COVID-19.”
Students and professionals from different universities worldwide (Singapore, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh) joined the meeting. The event was hosted & moderated by Mohammad Ali Kazmi, Chairperson of IEEE IAS BUET Student Branch Chapter, Nayeeb Rashid, Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch & Mumtahina Islam Sukanya, Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch WIE Affinity Group.
Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor (EEE), BUET & Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section, initiated the program with a welcome note. After her inauguration speech, Dr. Sanjib Kumar Panda, Associate Professor, ECE Department, National University of Singapore, gave a brief overview of his research regarding control aspects of renewable energy. Dr. Panda was the keynote speaker for the event. The meeting turned into lively discussion due to the back and forth question-answer between him and the students.
Then, Shivam Abhilash, Chapter Adviser, IEEE IAS Jadavpur University, Kolkata, made us aware of his IEEE IAS Chapter activities. Then, he, along with his students, gave an outstanding presentation. We had Boby Philip as the third speaker. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Kerala. He discussed how covid-19 had affected our lives and the industry.
Next, M.K. Dilan, Chairman, IEEE IAS Sri Lanka Chapter, enlightened our minds by sharing his research projects. During the time of lockdown, the University of Ruhuna had made a robot for assisting covid patients. Dr. Subodha Gunawardena, Senior Lecturer from that university, talked about the process of making that robot.
After that, our next valued speaker, Mainak Sengupta, started his presentation titled ‘Industry insights and applications during covid 19’. First, he showed some research works on Induction Heating, Resonant converters, etc. Then, he discussed with us how hard it is to get the apparatus during the pandemic. He also argued how the pandemic disruption has adversely affected the items that need an industrial workshop and skilled manpower support.
Next, Dr. M.V.Rajesh, An Associate Professor in ECE, commenced his work on ‘Industries & Technologies that will shape the post-virus world’. He presented how we can use technology in Healthcare, Work, Education, Entertainment, Customer Service, etc. in the post-virus world.
Then, our next presenter, Sithu D Sudarshan, started the discussion on ‘Levers of Digital Industry’. He argued how digital industries and technologies like sensors, cloud, data lake, AR/VR, AI/ML, Smart Materials are helping us in this pandemic. He also talked about the opportunities in this sector. His central theme was ‘Act Locally, Think Globally.’ This idea impressed our audiences so much. Inspired by this idea, Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor (EEE), BUET, discussed collaboration and its impact on the human race. After that, she opened the floor for everyone to express their thoughts and ask questions. As a result, we got a short, interactive session where the audience conveyed their valuable opinions.
Later, our final speaker, Samsuddin Ahmed, an assistant professor at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology started showing his presentation on ‘Quantitative Analysis of Brain MRI & AI-based Diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease.’ Finally, he ended his discussion by showing his current work on ‘Hippocampus Localization .’
After 3 hours of a prolonged interactive and lively discussion, this event came to the edge of an end. Mohammed Ali Kazmi, Chairperson, IEEE IAS BUET SB, presented his closing statements and requested all the audiences to turn on their video for a group photo. Finally, the event ended when Dr. Shaikh Fattah & Dr. Celia Shahnaz stated the closing remarks and expressed their desire to arrange such events soon. They thanked the audience and esteemed speakers for giving their valuable time.
